Editor's Verdict: Amazon Instant Movies is a great movie download website hosted by the great online store, Amazon.com. In addition to purchasing all manner of items on the Amazon website, you can also download a huge range of movies and TV shows to rent or purchase. With a great website that's easily navigable, competitive prices and a massive movie library to browse, it certainly warrants its place at number 3. However, there are also one or two things to know before you sign up, so read on for more details. It's completely free to register and create an account with Amazon.com. Whilst the focus of this review is on the movie download aspect of the site, it's important to mention that Amazon is a truly global marketplace where you can buy a massive range of products quickly and easily. It's likely that most readers already use Amazon to buy online, or at least have heard of the website. However, many won't have downloaded from their great range of movies and TV shows. If you do have to register make sure you have a valid email address when you complete the online application. Within a couple of minutes your account will be setup and you're free to browse the store. Clicking on 'most popular' on the website homepage will take you to their online catalog. Amazon boasts over 100,000 movies and TV episodes to browse and download. At the time of this review there were 44, 565 movies and 7,254 TV series. This represents a significant step up from the size of the library on our number 4 site. Clicking on the most popular tab brings up a list of 51,819 items listed in order of downloads, with the newest Hollywood releases typically topping the list. You can watch films instantly on your PC or Mac, by steaming or downloading. You can either scroll through the list in its entirety (which isn't a particularly efficient way to browse) or there are a couple of other options. The key word search allows you to enter your own term(s) which returns all content associated with the words you've entered. Alternatively, there's a great list of one-click tabs and filters to help you narrow your search as you browse. These appear down the left hand side of the page. For example, you can filter just new releases (films available in the last 30 days) and movies coming soon. You can also browse by purchase type, either download to purchase (26,253) or download to rent (25,558), see below for more details. It's also possible to browse by genre, of which there are 28 (and associated sub-genres) e.g. action&adventure (5,993), comedy (7,505) and kids and family films (2,456). In addition to mainstream content you can also find a range of foreign films (2,183), documentaries (5,983) and TV shows too. There are also tabs to find all content featuring a specific actor or director, as well as price category and release decade filters. As mentioned above, there are two principal ways of purchasing content. Purchasing to rent allows you to watch on PC, Mac or one of the compatible devices supported by the site an unlimited number of times within a 48 hour period (see the site for a scrollable list of all devices supported). You download the film for a period of 30 days and need to start watching within this time or the movie is no longer available. Once you start to watch online or download your 48 hour rental period commences. The movie file is automatically removed from your hard drive after this time. You can download to your TiVo device or Windows PC. You need to specify your viewing choice when you purchase and once you start downloading the file this cannot be changed. It's also important to note that rentals can't be transferred to portable devices. Downloading to purchase costs more but you get unlimited viewing without time restriction. You can download purchased content to your TiVo, DVR or Windows PC, as well as transfer content to 2 portable devices. However, new releases may not be available for some time due to licensing restrictions. Prices are competitive, with new releases costing around $3.99 to rent and $14.99 to buy. Standard releases will cost slightly less (around $3.99 to rent and $9.99 to buy). meanwhile, TV shows will cost from $1.99 upwards per episode. Expect to pay a dollar or two extra for HD rentals, and about $5.00 extra to download HD to buy. If you register with Amazon Prime, for $79.00 per year you get a whole range of benefits and extras, including a wide range of free movie and documentary downloads. The site has a really good help section and prompt telephone and email support, so if you have any questions or queries there are enough resources to help. Amazon Instant Movies is a great feature from the renowned Amazon online store.
