Editor's Verdict: The familiar high street movie rental store 'Blockbuster' offers a fantastic movie download service that can be accessed from your PC rather than to have to trudge to the video store. Like its hugely successful high street counterpart, Blockbuster.com is a real winner, with a fabulous range of movies, great features and an easy to use website. Whilst not quite matching the standard set by our Number 1 choice, there's plenty to sing about. A major reason why Blockbuster will appeal to many is because lots of people will have visited their stores and rented videos and DVDs for many years and their winning formula translates to the web. There's a massive choice of over 30,000 movies organized into 28 genres. As well as the more mainstream categories, e.g. 'action', 'drama' and 'sci-fi', you'll also find sections devoted to world cinema, documentary films and performing arts movies, so there should be plenty of content to suit those looking for the latest Hollywood blockbusters or independents, arthouse and world cinema too. As well as browsing movies by genre and title, you can also browse by actor/director to see a specific person's canon of works (or if you remember who acted in or directed a movie but can't remember the title), or browse the whole A-Z list if you have plenty of time to spare. Once you click on a main category you can break that genre down further into sub-categories (e.g. the 'action' genre alone can be broken down further into 'action comedy', 'action thriller', 'adventure drama', 'comic book & super hero', 'epic', 'James Bond', 'martial arts/samurai', NASA', 'romantic adventure', 'sci-fi & fantasy action', 'sea adventure', 'swashbucklers' and 'sword & sandal'). If that wasn't enough, there are also filters allowing you to list the best rated, newest and most popular titles from that genre, as well as top picks for each year. There's a keyword search too. By clicking on a title you get access to the movie synopsis, credits, customer ratings and more. You can also write your own review here. There are two main ways that you can purchase movies online. Renting by mail involves taking out a monthly subscription membership (see above) and DVDs are mailed (by first class US post) to your address. You can create a 'queue' movies online and as soon as you sign up your first DVD is mailed to you. Subscription memberships differ only in as much that you are entitled to one, two or three DVDs rentals at any one time. Opting to rent multiple DVDs concurrently works out top be more expensive. Logic suggests that the 2 out at 1 time subscription would make sense in that whilst one DVD is being exchanged, you still have another to watch. Basically, when you return a DVD another of your choices is dispatched, so there are no late fees. Each subscription allows unlimited exchanges. If you watch movies regularly the prices are reasonable (see above). Blockbuster On Demand enables you to download content on your PC, portable device, Blu-ray player, HDTV, TiVo and many other devices. If you go to the site, click 'help', you can access a list of all supported devices, which is worth doing before you sign up, only to find that your device isn't included! That said, a great many devices are covered, so you shouldn't have a problem. It's important to note the Blockbuster On Demand isn't part of the subscription package; this covers only the DVDs you rent by mail. Blockbuster On Demand simply charges on a pay per view basis. Expect to pay from $0.99 to $3.99 per item if you choose to download to rent. Downloads are available on your PC for 30 days; once you start to download or stream a 48 hour rental period commences. You get unlimited views and no time restrictions if you download to buy; expect to pay $9.99 to $21.99 per title. After expiring, the file is automatically removed from your hard drive. It's possible to create a free Blockbuster account online (valid email address required) without taking out a subscription package and just use the download service. You'll need to link your account to the device you use to download too, then you're free to go ahead and download movies. For this you need to install an easy to use Blockbuster Download Manager to watch movies online and keep track of your film files. You can store as many as you have room for on your hard drive and organize which to download first if you pay for more than one. All of the movies you download are very high quality (1500K), but not quite DVD quality so as to keep the file size down. That means most movies are around 1GB and will take about an hour to download with a fast broadband connection. This is in line with all other movie download providers and you will hardly notice the difference between the quality of your download compared to that of a DVD. The advantage of downloading as opposed to renting from a video store is that you won't be disappointed if none of the DVDs of the movie you want to see are available (you can check availability by clicking on that title). Just falling short of our Number 1 spot, Blockbuster.com is one of the truly great, professional download sites in this category (along with Amazon On Demand and Netflix.com). With a staggering movie catalog, flexible options that allow you to rent DVDs, download content to a range of devices and watch online, you're not only spoilt for choice but get a really professional, polished service. It's a wise choice if you're serious about film and narrowly misses out on our top spot.
