Think back to the good old days, when movies were simple and the script came before the special effects. If you want to relive, or discover, those bygone movies of yesteryear, BnW Movies might very well be the site for you. This website allows you to watch or download a range of old black and white movies completely for free.  This is all legal and above board, so in terms of value it can’t be beaten!

You may have already worked this out, but if you’re looking for modern blockbusters then this definitely isn’t the website for you. BnWMovies is completely dedicated to old black and white productions such as Betty Boop, The Man Who Came to Dinner and Dracula. It can be a useful resource for a variety of people, including black and white movie fans or anyone who needs to do a bit of research into older movies. Because you’re able to legally download the movies you can watch them as often as you like even if you’re offline, although it is important to read the terms and conditions of use as you don’t want to fall foul of the law by broadcasting movies if you’ve not got permission.

The quality of the movies is pretty poor. This isn’t the fault of the site most of the time, but rather the age of the movies means that they’re not great quality (audio and visual, rather than the story and acting!). Some of the movies are over 80 years old though, so it’s hardly a surprise that they’re not in HD. A number of the movies are available with subtitles when you download them, alternatively the streaming options tend not to have subtitles. As this is all achieved through your browser or via download, the running quality of your movies will often depend on the software you’re using, although the site does offer advice on how best to play their movies.

You can purchase the movies if you want to own an official copy, although the website does this through Amazon rather than its own store. Because these movies are quite old they tend to be pretty cheap, and you also get the advantage of reading member reviews. This is particularly useful because the people using the website are old movie fans, so you won’t get a lot of youngsters claiming that a movie is terrible simply because it doesn’t have explosions in it.

BNWmovies is a very specific beast. It’s for black and white movie fans, and whilst it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of other download sites it does a great job of what it sets out to do: provides free black and white movies to anyone who wants them.
