MovieFlix breaks from the usual movie download site mould to offer a different kind of service than we are used to. It doesn't offer new release feature movies but has a huge collection of classic movies that will appeal to film buffs and enthusiasts.
The first impression we got when arriving at the MovieFlix home page was that the site looks pretty amateurish and could do with a bit of a redesign. However, it's certainly not the worst looking site out there. It's difficult to put your finger on exactly what is wrong with it - maybe it's the dodgy banner ads or the Google ad-words box you wouldn't expect to see on a professional company's web site - but the whole site just feels a bit below par. On the plus side though, it is very easy to navigate and all the movies are organised into intuitive categories.
The intuitive categories really are handy for a site like MovieFlix. It is likely you will be going there with no idea as to what film you want to watch. That's because MovieFlix has opted to steer clear of mainstream Hollywood films and offers a wide selection of films from the 30s through to the 70s. Now you'll probably stop reading here if you're looking for the latest James Bond blockbuster, but if your movie tastes extend a bit wider you might find something here you'll like. Particularly noteworthy is the selection of Charlie Chaplin movies on offer or the huge library of classic TV.
The most novel idea here is to let users submit their own movies for hosting on MovieFlix. The site lets members send in their own movies and, if the admin team approves, they can be made available to everyone. This ensures the collection is full of some weird and wonderful creations, but we're sure the team stop anything too disturbing from being uploaded!
One thing we particularly like about MovieFlix is that they provide a freephone number if you are having any problems using the service. We found the staff to be very helpful and knowledgeable when we rang up. However, it's unlikely you will have to use the number as it's so easy to watch films through the site. As long as you have a PC running Windows Media Player or RealPlayer you won't have a problem. Movies are accessed through links on the site which launch your preferred player and start the movie instantly.
The quality of the movies you watch from MovieFlix varies. Each movie usually has a broadband and narrowband option, but often even broadband versions are only encoded at 256Kbps. On the plus side that means people with relatively slow connections can still enjoy streaming movies, but those with faster connections will be used to better quality.
One of the best things about MovieFlix is the price. Basic membership is free and will grant you access to the free content it offers. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to search only the free movies so you might be hunting for a while. A Plus membership costs $11.75 per month and gives you access to the whole collection of movies at any time with no extra charges. That means you can stream as many movies as you want as often as you want. Even given the fact that there are no major release movies on the site we are sure you will be able to find some hilarious B-movies that will justify the monthly cost!
Overall MovieFlix offers a niche service which will probably only be appealing to movie buffs or students with too much time on their hands. However, the site works well and is about as good value as you will find for the number of titles on offer. If you can spare $11.75 we say try it for a month and you are bound to find a couple of films to entertain you!
