Totalvid is a specialist video download service catering for videos you aren't likely to find in your local store. With over 50 categories to choose from, ranging from cookery to martial arts, it's a great place to come if you want to learn something new.
Totalvid is another one of these sites that irritate us during the review process because every link you click seems to lead you to the sign up page and so it's frustrating trying to see what is available before deciding whether or not to part with your cash. The site isn't all that well designed and often feels far too busy and clunky to use, but it is reasonably easy to navigate and download videos from.
We use the term videos here rather than movies because Totalvid does not carry any of the latest blockbusters or even independent movies. Rather, it specialises in educational and extreme sports videos. There is actually quite a lot of content here so the site could be quite useful if you want to pick up a new skill or if you are an extreme sports enthusiast, but those after pure entertainment won't find it here.
Totalvid charges only $9.95 for unlimited movie downloads, which is pretty good value for money if they have the type of thing you are looking for. The videos are protected using the Windows Media DRM mechanism so you do have to periodically renew your licenses even with an unlimited subscription. As for the quality, it can vary quite a lot depending on the video itself because they all come from different, usually independent, sources. However, most of the ones we tried were good enough to watch.
Totalvid is trying something a bit different in the movie download market and we respect them for that. We are sure some people will find exactly what they are looking for here, but for mainstream movies others will have to try elsewhere. To sum up: if you are looking for lots of educational and instructional content then Totalvid is for you.
