EZtakes is a unique service in that it offers movies to download DRM free. It doesn't carry Hollywood titles or the latest releases but has a huge catalogue of classic and independent movies. Film buffs and casual watchers alike are bound to find something of interest here.
EZtakes web site definitely does not have one of the most eye-catching designs we have ever seen. Often the text doesn't line up properly and the graphic icons look dated and washed out. In some ways it feels like it probably hasn't changed much in the 6 or so years since the company was established. However, as they say, looks aren't everything, and if you can get past the dreary design the site actually works very well. All the movies on offer are categorised nicely and there are specialist lists to group together hand picked collections. Each movie has its own separate page which gives more detailed info and a brief synopsis of the plot. It also contains details of the different options available for download or mail order delivery.
Generally you will be using EZtakes to download movies to your hard drive. To do this the company provides some helpful download manager software. Like the site itself, this isn't the flashiest looking application we have ever used, but it runs very well and provides all the features you will need. The burn facility is great and lets you easily burn movies to DVD for backup purposes. One particularly handy feature that we haven't seen from other software is the ability to print a DVD cover for the movies you download. This means you can build up a great looking physical DVD collection from your online downloads.
As an addition to the download software EZtakes offers a 'to go' option which will convert any movies you download into iPod or Zune compatible MP4 files. This is downloaded as an extension to the software and integrates seamlessly. It only costs an extra one off fee of $9.99 and is a great addition if you plan to watch your movies on the road.
One of the unique things about EZtakes is that it provides streaming access to a lot of movies for free. Not all movies can be streamed, but a button will appear if the feature is possible. The best part of it is you don't even have to sign up to the site to get it - so go and give it a try right now! The quality of the streams, as you would expect, is not as good as the paid for downloads but is perfectly watchable.
Since EZtakes does not offer a subscription service, movies are paid for per download. The price varies vastly depending on the title so some can be downloaded for less than $2 while others can be $20. A nice extra we appreciated was that the CEO of the company offers a no quibble refund for first time buyers if they encounter a technical problem when downloading a movie. Although we should point out it's unlikely you will need it as the download process is very easy.
Unlike pretty much every other site in this category EZtakes offers movies with no DRM protection. This is a really useful feature as it means you are free to do what you want with the movie - within the terms and conditions obviously. This means you are free to watch it in any video player software and free to burn as many backup copies as you require.
EZtakes is one of the best independent movie download providers we have seen. They have a huge catalogue of movies including famous Hitchcock movies and cult classics like 'Night of the Living Dead'. All downloads are DRM free which is unique amongst our top 10 providers and the download process couldn't be easier. If you are looking for the latest Hollywood blockbusters you should look elsewhere, but for some great classic and independent movies EZtakes wins hands down.
