Netflix has taken the world by storm in the past few years and continues to go from strength to strength. It is primarily a browser-based movie and TV show viewing platform, however, in the US they also offer DVD and Blue-ray movie rental options. There are a wide range of movies and TV shows with no limits on how often you watch / stream them. Its content is distinctive to the country your account is registered with, so for the purposes of this review we will be considering Netflix with particular reference to the videos available in the US. At around $8 per month we believe that this is one of the cheapest and most flexible options for movie fans.
Once you’ve signed up you’re given one month’s free access to all the movies and shows on Netflix, which is a great way to get a feel for the site and to find out what it has to offer you. Navigation is very intuitive, although we do often find that it’s easier to search for shows on a laptop or desktop rather than on a games console. Still, each works well. You can find a movie by its title or its actors, directors or themes.
Navigating Netflix is therefore easy and intuitive. Once you find a show (either through browsing, based on a recommendation or through performing a search) the player allows you to quickly switch between seasons and episodes. A brief description of each episode is also given to remind you of what happens, which can be very useful if you have several shows on the go at once. Your home page will also show you the shows you've been watching recently so you don't need to keep searching for them
Netflix.com learns about what you like, which is really useful. The more videos you watch and rate, the better and more accurate the matches become. You can also use a quiz-like game if you’re unsure what to watch and it will give you a few options that you might enjoy. This system really works when you don't know what to watch as it makes recommendations based on real stats, not just guess work. You can keep updating the system with ratings of movies you've seen, even if you didn't watch them on Netflix.
As you’re able to use Netflix on several devices, you can begin a show, stop, and then continue from where you left off. This works even if you are on a completely different device, so won’t have to skip through to find where you were. However, using Netflix on several screens costs extra. That said, in our opinion it’s probably worth the extra $1 to use it in HD on more than one device.
You will find a strong range of modern and classic movies to watch on this site, although the most recent Hollywood blockbusters tend not to appear for a while. Even though this might be a turn-off, the fact that Netflix make their own shows (such as House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black) means that you’ll get access to exclusive highl- rated TV content. As your subscription fees help Netflix to make more great original productions, so you could even regard it as a kind of personal investment.
Netflix is reasonably priced, intelligent and offers you unlimited hours of entertainment. With a 30-day free trial you can’t lose, so why not check it out?
